In our childhood the boys mostly used to read Hardy Boys by Franklin W Dixon while the girls used to read Nancy Drew by Carolyn Keene. However, no person by the name of Franklin W Dixon or Carolyn Keene ever existed. There were a number of authors who used these as pen names, both for Stratemeyer Syndicate. Read more here and here.
