Mohammad Rafi and Kishore Kumar are inarguably the two best male singers Indian Cinema has seen and the debate about which one of them was better has been going on for ages now.
However, one interesting fact that gives Mohd. Rafi an edge over Kishore Kumar is that Mohd. Rafi gave his voice as many as 6 times to the songs which were performed on the screen by Kishore Kumar. You can read more here.
P.S. I have grown up listening to the songs of both these maestros and adore both of them equally.
Hey Aviral,
ReplyDeleteYour blog reminded me of something my Dad told me long bak. The song "laga chunari me daag 'was first offered to Kishore Kumar who refused to sing it as he thought he wouldn’t be able to do justice with the song. He referred Mannadey for the song. The song proved to be a great success and is still considered to decree as an unsurpassed song of Bollywood.
Whereas even I grew up singing the songs of Kishore and Rafi, and even Mukesh and mannadey, and I accept and realize that Kishore is no doubt the most popular singer of bollywood and perhaps would continue to remain so in the coming decades also, I seriously doubt if he was actually as good too.
Mannadey though a great singer failed to become popular. Rafi and Mukesh gave some of the unsurpassed songs too, still noone could ever attain the same regard as kishore kumar did. I seriously wonder why :)
PS: i follow your blog religiously. Keep posting . Loving the "facts" series
I loved this post and the link...
ReplyDeleteI never knew Mhd Rafi even lent his voice to few of the songs enacted by Kishore Kumar!!
I also like Manna Dey's songs, especially the duets with Kishore Kumar like "yeh dostihum nhi todenge" , "ek chatur nar.."etc..
and one bengali song is unforgettable. It reminds me of the good times we friends had ,at ICH..He repents in this song that those times spent at coffee house are past now..
